Expedition was appointed to provide engineering services to develop the masterplan for this 12 hectare site just outside Hartlepool. The aspiration is to create an exemplar sustainable development, with the aims of providing high quality housing for vulnerable members of society, creating a vibrant community and minimising whole life environmental impacts.

Initially located within the 1 in 100 year floodplain, we carried out some initial modelling work to demonstrate that the extent of flooding had been overestimated and that, through the modest upgrade to an existing culvert, could be removed from the floodplain completely. This unlocked the site for development.

In addition to dealing with flood risk aspects, we have also been responsible for the development of a site-wide sustainable energy strategy, to minimise carbon emissions in the most cost effective way, and to meet Zero Carbon requirements for the later phases of the development.

We also developed a sustainable drainage strategy, integrating attenuation ponds within the landscaping and amenity proposals, and enhancing biodiversity. We have also developed proposals for re-opening part of the culverted watercourse into an open channel.

The site as just been granted planning permission.
