The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) provides world-class new homes for the Greek National Library and the Greek National Opera, as well as the creation of the much needed 170,000 m² Stavros Niarchos Public Park. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the SNFCC is a monument to the value of culture, learning and humanity.

As the structural engineer, Expedition played a major role in helping to achieve the aspirations associated with a project of the magnitude of the SNFCC. Our design effort was carefully targeted: good economically competitive design was required for the bulk of the project while special design solutions respond to particular ground, architectural and seismic challenges.

Targeted innovation was critical to the success of this project. In particular, the design and construction of the canopy that supports 10,000m² of photovoltaics was “right at the edge” of structural engineering knowledge and industry capability.

With LEED Platinum environmental certification this project achieves the highest levels of environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Around 60,000 people attended opening parties in June 2016, demonstrating that the project has already become a subject of pride for the people of Athens and a cultural focus point.
