Working with Flanagan Lawrence architects we developed a new lightweight roof scheme, aimed at rejuvenating the 1976-built Szczecin outdoor theatre in Poland.
The proposals for the new 3000m2 cable-net roof re-use as much existing structure as possible, including existing foundations and the existing placemaking arch. Through close collaboration with the design team the roof is an optimised combination of architectural, acoustic, and structural requirements, unlike conventional canopies, which might focus on just one of these disciplines to the detriment of the others. See the ASCE article for more details.
The new roof will be composed of a slender steel ring beam supporting a fabric covered cable-net structure. Stay cables and tension anchors are strategically placed around the optimised ring beam to create a crisp edge for the canopy.
Following the competition win in 2016, the restoration and construction of the new enclosure is due to take place during 2018.
