Expedition developed the integrated Sustainability and Energy strategies for the regeneration of the Buckskin and South Ham estates, built between the 1950s and 1970s. We are supporting the joint venture as they invest in the London ‘overspill’ through a combination of retrofit, infill development, and regeneration schemes.
With ongoing challenges as the aging post-war housing stock becomes increasingly difficult to maintain and improve, further to being expensive for residents to run, street layouts are not conducive to community connectivity and sustainable transport options.
The masterplan aims to optimise the performance of existing residential stock, provide additional homes, and improve the estate layouts. Working alongside the design team, strategic objectives have been established to deliver resilient, low carbon neighbourhoods that balance viability constraints with ambitious sustainability targets. This includes aligning the Sustainability Strategy with the estate Vision as “a place of opportunity for all”.
A place of opportunity for all
By focusing on how a just transition could be delivered through the regeneration process, a set of six priorities were established to cover the comfort of homes, increase availability of ‘healthy’ transport options, and provide a resilient landscape.
The extended programme required the Energy Strategy to work across multiple phases with opportunities for revenue generation and community involvement. Positioned in line with the sustainability priorities, the team set out an approach for neighbourhood-scale energy and carbon planning to ensure that energy is flexible, deliverable, and secure for current and future residents.
Further to the Sustainability and Energy strategies, we have been supporting Sovereign Hill Partnership to develop an Estate Management Strategy, as well as additional feasibility work for the wider masterplan.
